I found I came full circle through the life drawing classes I studied at ANU. Before my degree I'd always drawn in pencil, very lightly, and not all that good. I couldn't get in the detail that was in my head, and I didn't often draw what was actually in front of me. From the beginning of the degree we were encouraged to use charcoal. Lots of practise, and into my second year of life drawing, Ante, my teacher recommended that I use pencil. The next week I did, and it clicked. I can now get into the details, get the shading right, and actually produce something that is recognisably the model. These two, Zoe and David, are my two best drawings from first semester last year.
